These days, I'm learning that my life is not under my control—and that is good news! Deep down, I already knew that, of course, but that knowledge didn't keep me from trying to grab the wheel with white (or light brown?) knuckles. The reason for the panic, stress, and worry was precisely because I didn't want control. Now, I'm learning to submit my fears and concerns to God as soon as I become aware of them; otherwise they're liable to ambush my heart and mind, allowing terror to snatch my joy.

See, there's a reason why the Bible equates joy with strength: joy is a potent motivator, and empowered people have the ability to change the world around them. Even all those years ago, the writers of the Good Book were familiar with the effectiveness of positive outlook. Despair puts on the brakes, but exuberance is an accelerant. As scary as it can feel, I'm learning to press into gladness, which signals God that I'm ready to be moved closer to my destiny.
