Everything Else Can Go.
One day, I'll get it together and post on an actual Friday—unfortunately, that day is not today! Still, here's what comes to mind when I think about the word keep. If you're not sure what the heck is going on, click this link to find out more about Five-Minute Friday fun!
Recently, life rudely forced us to come to the realization that what we've become accustomed to is no longer sustainable. It wasn't a complete surprise, to be honest; we'd been experiencing spiritual discomfort for quite some time, a stirring in our hearts to reach for something better for our little five-some.
Now that our current circumstances have removed the choice not to do better, we've begun the process of sifting through our possessions, parsing out what to keep and what we can do without. It's been a powerful journey sorting through our accumulations with a discerning—rather than emotional—eye. Memories of each acquisition come flooding back, many of which have made me cringe. (I paid so much for that and I didn't even use it!!) Others, however, are less painfully assessed for their worth. It has brought up the cost versus value issue, which is surprisingly philosophical.
What is this item really worth to us? To others?
What will we truly need in the journey ahead? What can we learn to do without?
As we prepare to close this chapter on our time here in Phoenix and embark on new adventures elsewhere, I am coming to the conclusion that I want to travel light, keeping only those items that enrich, rather than weigh down. The lessons we're learning right now are priceless because they've require everything we have—we fought and hurt and wept and agonized and faced demons for them. We don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past and we certainly don't want to bring anything useless into our new beginning. This is our opportunity to live the way we've always wanted, to let go of what's behind in favor of what's ahead.
Here's what we'll be keeping for sure: Our unshakeable faith in God and our family.
Everything else can go.
